When Men Sin (3)
God killed two men for doing “what He had not commanded them” (read Leviticus 10:1-3). This was a failure to consider His glory and holiness.
Today, some people believe that just avoiding what God has forbidden keeps us from sin. Others would accept this and include doing what God has commanded. But oft overlooked are sins which involve what God did not command. When God gives instruction, man is not to add to it—man is not to do what God did not command.
What is wrong with the doctrines and commandments of men (Colossians 2:20-23)? God did not command them! That is reason enough to avoid them. God has given the instruction that we need—beware of the instruction that is not from Him!
To help us to think through this concept, I’ll ask this question for your consideration-- Would it be sinful to add grape jelly to the bread that is eaten within the Lord’s Supper? Why or why not?
The next article in this series will look to Scripture for the answer.
