The Economy Trumps Religion

This was Time’s top religion story of 2008 (Dec. 22, 2008). Time reported that “…an October poll showed only 10% of Americans regarded the country’s moral and spiritual consideration as their foremost electoral concern. By Election Day, money woes pushed religion off the table.”

If this accurately reflects the motive of American voters, then that is reason for concern. But I suppose it’s no surprise, after all-

  • sporting events often trump religion. How many people choose to attend a Colts or Pacers game instead of assembling to worship (Hebrews 10:25)?
  • television often trumps religion. “I will set nothing wicked before my eyes” (Psalm 101:3). David’s failure to guard his eyes led to many other sins. Do you watch television shows full of barely-dressed men and women?
  • friendships often trump religion. If we avoid discussing religious topics because it might “harm a friendship” (this was the advice of an area “pastor”)—what has a higher priority?

Americans have become accustomed to putting other things ahead of God and His religion. We can simply add “the economy” to that list.
