Nadab & Abihu and Things Not Commanded
And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. (Leviticus 10:1-2).
Why did these men die? Murder? Profaning the Sabbath? The text says they offered fire which God commanded them not.
Read this text again and think. God was displeased when men did what God had not commanded them to do.
Many people today do things God has not commanded without realizing it.
Common Things Which God Has Not Commanded Today
| "Christening" babies | Baptizing by pouring water |
| Worshiping God by burning incense | Baptizing by sprinkling water |
| Church-sponsored carnivals and parties | Worshiping God by playing an instrument |
| Baptizing someone already saved | Salvation by "The Sinner's Prayer" |
| Different kinds of world-wide churches | Speaking in tongues to prove salvation |
Nadab and Abihu offered strange fire---fire that was foreign to God’s Word (Lev. 10:1-2). Sadly, men today are still walking in the footsteps of these two men, offering things to God which He has not commanded. Does it matter if God has asked for them or not? Just ask Nadab and Abihu. . . Will you heed the warning of Scripture or, like Nadab and Abihu, do things which God has not commanded?
