Is It Possible: To Understand What the Bible Teaches?

  1. God has always made Himself understandable. God has always effectively communicated His will to His creation. Did Adam and Eve understand what God taught about “dietary restrictions”? Could Jesus’ earthly audiences understand what He taught them? Clearly, God has a history of being able to speak in a way that can be understood.
  2. God says that we can understand His word. To the Ephesians Paul said, “… when you read, you may understand my knowledge…” (Ephesians 3:4). If Timothy would work, he could rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). By honestly searching the Scriptures, we can know what is true (Acts 17:11).
  3. God says that we must understand His word. Notice the clear command to “understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:17). This natural, not miraculous, process depends heavily upon our attitude. We must desire to know and do what God has said. Thus Jesus often said “He who has ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew 13:9).

God is the author of understandable words, not confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). Do you understand when you read? You can. If we can help, “come let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:18).
