"I and My Father are One"
The title quotes one of Jesus’ defining statements in which He affirms His equality with the Father.
Today, some misuse this text to teach that Jesus is the Father. Sometimes identifying themselves as an “Apostolic Church,” they teach that Jesus is the Son and the Father and the Holy Spirit. What saith the Scriptures?
Are those who are “one” in marriage the same person (Matthew 19:6)?
In John 17:21, Jesus’ prayed that all believers would be “one” in the same way that He was one with the Father. Was Jesus praying to Himself? Was Jesus praying that all believers would become the same person? In Matthew 17:5 who said “This is My Beloved Son… Hear Him”?
We must understand the meaning of “one” in each text. If we seek the one hope then we must understand the One Spirit, One Lord, and One Father (Ephesians 4:4-6).
