Good "News"
These two “new” things teach us of newness in Christ:
1. New life New life begins at the new birth—born of water and the Spirit (John 3:3-5; Titus 3:5). He that believes (the Spirit’s words in Scripture) and is baptized (in water) is saved—born of the water and Spirit. Thus we are a new creation, having chosen God’s new way of life (Romans 6:4-6). Sadly, the “New Year” is known for activity typical of the old way of life: licentious dress, lustful dancing, and drinking alcohol (1 Peter 4:3).
2. New Covenant This is contrasted with the old covenant (Exodus 34:27). That covenant was dedicated with animal blood (Heb. 9:18-20). The new covenant was dedicated with Jesus’ blood (Matt. 26:28).
The national distinction (Jew versus Gentile), marital regulation (see Deuteronomy 21:15), and worship (incense, musical instruments) of the old covenant have passed away (Heb. 8:13; 10:9), and Jesus has provided a new and better way (Heb. 10:20; 8:6; 7:22).
