Freedom in Christ and Instrumental Music

After reading the article “God’s Permission, Pianos, and PowerPoint” a kind yet concerned reader called claiming that “freedom in Christ” justifies the use of musical instruments in worship.

If there was even one passage in the New Testament that showed God’s approval of Christians worshiping by playing instruments, I believe the caller would have mentioned it. But there is no such Scripture.

So does “freedom in Christ” give us freedom to do anything, as long it is not specifically forbidden? If so, then that “freedom” also allows polygamy (did the Mormons have it right?!), the religious burning of incense, and animal sacrifices. Does “freedom” allow these things since “God didn’t say not to” do them?

Study, think, and be satisfied with what God has revealed and beware of false claims of liberty (2 Peter 2:19).
