Biblical Pastors
The original teaching of Scripture regarding pastors has been discarded by centuries of human tradition.
Ephesians 4:11 identifies pastors as a part of God’s plan for His church. Paul met with the Ephesian elders, encouraging them to shepherd (to pastor) the flock (Acts 20:17, 28).
Paul taught Titus and Timothy the qualifications for pastors, also identifying pastors as elders and bishops (read Titus 1:5-9; 1 Timothy 3:1-7). No Scripture identifies Paul or Timothy as pastors, but some still imagine Paul as “the chief pastor.” And religious titles for men such as "Reverend" and "Holy Father" are used in rebellion against God (Matthew 23:8).
Why are these leaders identified in different ways in Scripture? “Elder” emphasizes that they are older, experienced men (1 Timothy 3:6). “Bishop” emphasizes their oversight (1 Peter 5:2). “Pastor” emphasizes the duty to feed (Acts 20:28).
There was never a “head, senior, or lead pastor” (this is man-made tradition—beware!). We consistently find multiple men doing this work together in one place (Acts 14:23; 20:17; 1 Peter 5:1-2).
