Biblical Bishops

“Who may serve as a bishop?” is a controversial question. Face it—the Bible is controversial. Read 1 Timothy 3:2-5-- a bishop must be “the husband of one wife” (NKJ). Some say this means that IF he is married, he can only have one wife but that marriage is optional. But Paul also says that he must rule his children well—therefore a bishop must have children. Verse 5 explains that the home is a training ground for a man before he serves as a bishop. This teaching is oft abandoned today--
In the Catholic church, a bishop must not be the husband of one wife.
The head of US’s Episcopal church is “Bishop Katharine Schori.” Is she the husband of one wife?!
Locally, the website of the New Day Church informs the public of its staff which includes pastors (pastor = bishop biblically) some of whom are women, never-married men, or men without any children.
While some will be uncomfortable with the specifics of this article, remember Jesus publicly called men back to what is written. That is our appeal. Contact us with comments/questions. Read the article “Biblical Pastors” for further study.
