Bad "News"
“New” is not always good. Israel often sinned by adding something “new”--
1. A new cart (2 Sam. 6:3) By moving the ark on a “new” cart, instead of with poles, Israel ignored God’s law. Today, men ignore God’s law for marriage: one man, one woman for life (Matt. 19:4-9) or submit and sacrificially love your spouse (Eph. 5:23, 25).
2. A new place to worship (1 Kg. 12:28-30) Instead of assembling in Jerusalem, Jeroboam had a new idea—worship in Dan and Bethel. Men often choose to watch a TV preacher instead of assembling to worship—another “new” idea (Hebrews 10:24-25).
3. A new priesthood (1 Kg. 12:31) Jeroboam started a new, more inclusive priesthood. Men today include female pastors and worship with instrumental music--things which God’s word excludes.
4. A new altar (2 Kg. 16:10, 15) Ahaz built a new altar, giving it more prominence than the bronze altar of God. That spirit lives today when men create a universal “holy day” (Christmas, Easter) and elevate it above the Lord’s Day which God revealed (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2; Rev. 1:10).
