American Amusement

Entertainment: “something affording pleasure, diversion, or amusement” (dictionary.com). Among America’s favorite forms of entertainment are movies and music. Drama and music have been a part of many ancient cultures, and Satan has always weaved his “values” into these popular pastimes.

The movie Hamlet 2, opening in late August (Shakespeare fan will be disappointed) is about a drama teacher’s controversial play. The musical score “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” indicates Jesus’ role in this play offers the reverence given to an American Idol contestant, not the Son of God. “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts” (1 Peter 3:15; John 20:28).

If any in your house listens to current “Top 40” pop songs then “I Kissed A Girl” has successfully maneuvered its way into the mind of someone in your home. The title sounds innocent enough until you learn that it is sung by a girl. Romans 1:26 describes such desires as “vile passions.”

Do these things provide pleasure or amusement to you or your children? Not if you understand God’s precepts and “hate every false way” (Psalm 119:104).
